busiest. it's estimated some 6 million americans will sign up for new gym memberships in january alone for those new year's resolutions. in dallas, casey steigel, fox news. >> have great weekend, everyone. the news keeps coming. here's brian now with the news edge at 11:00. winter weather may have affected your friday commute now that temperatures are dropping. we're looking at another frigid night ahead. we'll start off down in the weather center with gary mcgrady. >> frigid indeed, brian. temperatures are dropping to the teens in some areas. they've actually been rising just a little bit here in town. right now we're sitting at 24 degrees. earlier we made it down to 21 when the snow was falling. we'll get a little colder overnight once the clouds begin to break up a little bit. in terms of snowfall totals this came in this afternoon, this evening just in time for the commute. good news, we didn't hear any major problems with the commute. i think a lot of people just had to slow down, probably took

you longer to get home, but all things considered it went off pretty well considering that we did have this snow moving through. lusby an inch, ashburn about 1/2-inch, germantown uninch and overall this is what we saw -- germantown one inch and overall this is what we saw, 1/2-inch up to 1 inch, a few more 1 1/2 inches up to the northern maryland sections, alexandria 1/2-inch, herndon .7, gaithersburg .7 and nationality they basically got a little less than 1/2-inch. so we really haven't had much this season at national. if again, temperatures tonight dropping down real cold. everybody will be below freezing. so watch out for some slick spots out there overnight tonight and early, early tomorrow morning. warm-up is still in the cards. we'll talk about that, full forecast coming up. viewers sending in pictures from all over the region, even fairview beach covered in snow in king george, virginia.

this came in from peggy in winchester. she says it was her grandson's first time playing in the snow. you can send your pictures to myweatherphoto@gmail.com. still no arrest in the beating and robbery of a teenager in the rhode island avenue metro station. tonight new concerns of crime in the area from people who just moved there. fox 5's audrey burns there. >> the teenager who was attacked is recovering at home. doctors wired his jaw shut to heal. he was mugged a couple hundred yards from rhode island row, a new multimillion dollar development and people living there are on edge. for the second time in three months there's been a serious attack near rhode island row, a sprawling new development of condos and 70,000 square feet of retail space in northeast. this time it was 17-year-old joseph agola beaten and robbed on the stairwell near the metro station. police are looking for seven

teenagers in connection with the attack that was so brutal his jaw will be wired shut the next six weeks. his mother who is blind is worried about caring for him. >> why? why should that happen to my son? what did he do to anybody? >> reporter: in october a 24- year-old woman living in the rhode island row condo complex was stabbed two dozen times during an attempted rape. police arrested a d.c. man in connection with that attack. lisa locksman who lives on the row says in some urban areas crime comes with the territory. >> because it's a transitional community. it's probably going to happen. >> reporter: katie carpenter says crime is something she doesn't want to get used to. >> i actually saw a girl step out of the metro and a kid snatched her phone and i was really surprised by that because i didn't know what happened and then yeah, somebody was like oh, her phone got snatched like it was no big deal. >> reporter: the rhode island

complex now has several layers of security including guards and keys to get in the building and elevators. >> i'm a resident of rhode island row and it's secure. i've never felt in harm's way at all. >> just common sense, not coming home late and things like that. besides that just common sense really. >> reporter: after this week's attack some residents are ramping up their personal safety. >> i really try not to be overly paranoid. i they've got enough things going on in my head i'd rather not, but i certainly will be more on guard, i guess. >> reporter: d.c. police hope some surveillance tape may help pinpoint a couple suspects in joseph agola's case. so far no one is in custody. a man involved in an assault in a maryland daycare center has been sentenced to 20 years behind bars. mickel young can be seen in this video wearing a dark jacket as he entered the family affair daycare center in landover last april and began

attacking a security guard there named jalen farmer after his request to use a telephone was denied. farmer lost vision in his right eye as a result of this. young's sister begged the court for mercy during sentencing saying her brother's issue is drugs. >> my brother is a good human being. he has two children. he is not a bad person. i love him and my family supports him in any and everything that happens. >> despite the injuries sustained to his eye, jalen farmer still works at that center. young will serve approximately 10 years before being eligible for patrol. hundredof thousands of very passionate people marched on the supreme court today protesting the ruling that allowed the constitutional right to an abortion. fox 5's will thomas has this story now from the newsroom. >> this is a crowd that believes in their cause so much they are willing to stand in the snow and bitter cold to show it. the pro lifers have been coming to washington four decades now since the roe versus wade decision legalizing abortion. some carried signs reading the

pro life generation. organizers say there's been 55 million abortions in america since it became legal. many of them were disappointed when president obama was reelected. adding to their woes controversial remarks by pro life senate candidates todd todd akin of missouri and richard mourdock of indiana. they were pleased by conservative gains at the state heavily. >> the status of the unborn child is increasing. medical science acknowledges the child as our newest patient, fetal therapy, fetal diagnosis and surgery. no question about it and laws are beginning on the state level to recognize the unborn as a real person and victim. >> it is, of course, a divisive issue, but the polls show public opinion on roe versus wade isn't changing much. the latest poll from the pew research center finds 66% of americans want to keep

thousands of crocodiles are on the loose after koresh rains and severe flooding -- torrential rains and severe flooding destroyed a farm in africa. now local farmers are teaming up to recapture the dangerous predators. >> reporter: here's one that didn't get away. the trouble is this crocodile is just one of thousands of escapees from a south african reptile farm. torrential rain forced the owner to open its gates to prevent flooding, but letting the water out allowed all the captors to swim to freedom. most are headed straight for africa's second largest river. many of the animals have been

recaptured, but over 10,000 are still on the run. >> the whole of last night we were capturing them. we caught 143 last night. so every night we'll just be capturing. if we can hit the percent of night, then in 50 days we'll have at least half of the crocs back that we thought we had lost. >> reporter: commercial crocodile farming is a small but growing business in south africa. they areaised for their skins and meat. the farmworkers say they'll go out and catch the missing animals as soon as they're spotted, but that's easier said than done. this reptile is one of africa's most feared predators and in water has few pairs. crocodile experts across the country have been asked to help with the search. the advantage for them is the crocodile is used to being the hunter, not the hunted. a nevada woman just looking for true love on match.com, but

so you get the real cold dry snow, champagne powder, great to ski on if you have about a foot and a half, but if you just have an inch or 1 1/2 inches or so, can't make snow bowls or snowmen. we didn't have enough snow today to go sledding. 24 the current temperature. that's gone up and stablized the last couple hours. once it stops snowing the temperature came up a little bit, still cold in the suburbs, though, 19 for gaithersburg, dulles 21 degrees and manassas 23, culpeper 25, leonardtown 23, across the bay for cambridge still real cold there, temperature of 19. how about the high today, 25 degrees. that's the coldest high temperature we've had since way back to january of 2010. so basically three years since we've had a day this cold for reagan national and dulles 22 and bwi thurgood marshall 22. i'm sure it's been a long time

for that as well but i didn't chase the records on those two locations. 25 for us, cincinnati 27, warmth in the central plains and southern plains. look, though, real cold, fargo 16, international falls 9 degrees and look where the cold stuff is, basically from the northern plains through the great lakes right on down into the southeast here, but things will change this weekend. we'll begin to have some of the warmth come up, not for saturday or for sunday, but by monday, tuesday, wednesday we'll be warmth around here that will actually take us up close to 60 degrees believe it or not. this weekend we're still stuck in the cold, 33 tomorrow with sunshine. there will be a chilly breeze, too. so if you're out tomorrow, keep that in mind. even though we're going to have sunshine and it may look warmer, the wind will get you. 35 on sunday. we'll have a few late day clouds, but it does look like the going to stay dry all

weekend long -- like it's going to stay dry all weekend long. snow is out of here. we have more snow coming from the northwest, but that will stay in the mountains. western side of the mountains will probably see another 4 to 6 inches of upslope snow. then you have clouds in place here. they'll begin to break up a little overnight tonight. then temperatures will drop down to the teens and i think lower 20s here in town. so if we get the clearing skies taking place overnight tonight, numbers will really drop. be careful early tomorrow morning out there. there may be a little ice in places, 25 for a high in gaithersburg tomorrow, wow, 25 frederick, 30 manassas, 32 fredericksburg, about 33 degrees in town and remember, keep in mind it is going to be a little warmer next week and it is going to be breezy for tomorrow and especially tomorrow late morning through the early part of the afternoon. so 33 for a high, probably only going to feel like it's in the 20s most of the day. am mix possible monday morning.
